Welcome to Little Explorers Reception Class!

In our class Mrs Davies is the class teacher and she oversees the learning opportunities for Reception as well as teaching Phonics, Literacy, Maths and reading our home time story.

Our children have ample opportunity to explore our amazing learning environment while getting the input they need to make them ready for year one come the summer.

Our Curriculum

To the right is our curriculum overview for Early years. Both classes follow the same themes per half term but it is under the discretion of the teachers how they implement these topics into their teaching.

Phonics

For our phonics lessons we follow 'Little Wandle'. We have daily half hour lessons which include GPC practice, blending, sentence reading, spelling and handwriting practice. The skills the children learn from these lessons are carried into all areas of the classroom and ensure they leave us confident in their reading and writing.

Literacy

We plan our Literacy lessons around the themes are are looking at each half term. These may depend on the time of year or special celebrations that are happening - Mrs Davies loves Halloween in particular and has written many a potion recipe!

The children have the opportunity to be a part of Drawing club as well which gives each child the power to create a little magic with their writing using their imaginations.

Maths

Maths in Reception is based on the 'Mastery in number' approach. These daily whole class sessions allow children to really take their time to understand number, and by the time they leave us they have an amazingly solid foundation in mathematics.

Guided Reading

Each child will have a guided reading book each week that will be given based on their current reading level. We want the children to be successful in their reading, so if your child is reading their book easily, don't worry! This is what we want for them to become confident, fluent readers. They will have the same book given to them as well as a reading record to take home.

Please ensure their book and reading record is brought back every week.

A charge of £3 will be given if books are lost or damaged.

PSED

As a school we follow the Jigsaw scheme for PSHE. Children in reception receive a small group session for around 20 minutes a week. Within these sessions they discuss topics such as aspirations, sharing and differences. We also have five 'No Outsiders' lessons a year. These are story based lessons which teach children about different families, and how none of us are exactly the same and how that makes our classroom all the more interesting!
