Year 1 Information:

School Uniform - Children should wear their full school uniform daily unless stated otherwise.

School Uniform should include: school jumper or cardigan, white shirt or white polo shirt, tie, black/grey trousers or skirt, blue gingham school dress, black shoes with a black sole.

PE – PE day to be confirmed. Children are to come to school in their PE kit.

They must wear the correct kit: a blue t-shirt, black shorts/joggers and trainers. 

Snack – Snack is £1 for the week or 20p each day. The children will be offered toast or fruit, this is to be pais to the class teacher weekly or termly. 

Reading – The children will bring their new reading books home this week and we ask that you read with them a minimum of 4 times per week and sign their reading records. They will get a tick on the ‘Reader for Life’ chart each time they read and will work towards their reading certificates.

Homework – Homework will be given out weekly. The children will bring their homework book home on a Friday and it must be returned the following Thursday.

Phonics and Reading

Your child is on their journey to becoming a skilled reader. In Reception, they learned all of the single letter sounds, the consonant digraphs and some vowel digraphs (digraph: two letters, one sound) and trigraphs (three letters, one sound). In Year 1, children will learn the remaining graphemes in the Little Wandle Letters and 
Sounds Revised programme. These are alternative spellings for the sounds that they already know. The children will become more fluent readers and will read increasingly 
challenging texts. 

All for the love of reading
• Teaching children the skills of reading will increase their will to read.
• Children who love reading, choose to read.
• Reading develops children’s vocabulary, understanding of the world and empathy.
• A love of reading is the biggest indicator of future academic success! To develop a love of reading, children must have the skills to read, which is why we teach them using phonics.

What is my child taught in school?
• In Year 1, children are taught a 30-minute phonics lesson every day.
• They will also have an opportunity to apply their phonic knowledge to reading a book (matched to their level), at least three times a week.
• Your child may need daily additional practice to help secure their learning.

Maths

In Year 1, children begin the Power Maths programme alongside Mastering Numnber, which the children started in Reception. Our maths topic this half term will include: 'Numbers to 10' and 'Part-whole within 10'.

Unit 1 - Numbers to 10

In this unit, children begin by sorting and grouping objects up to 10. They then count to 10 and focus on ‘one more’ and ‘one less’ before learning how to use a number line to count forwards and backwards.

Before they start this unit, it is expected that children can:
• describe similarities and differences between objects
• sort objects into groups based on simple criteria.

Unit 2 - Part-whole within 10

This unit, which builds on Unit 1: Numbers to 10, introduces children to the part-whole model, focusing on different ways of partitioning numbers to 10. Children use the part whole model to help them write and compare number bonds. They will continue to use these skills in Unit 3, which focuses on addition.

Before they start this unit, it is expected that children:
• know how to sort and compare objects to 10
• understand how to count on and back within 10
• can order a set of numbers and use the vocabulary ‘less than’, ‘more than’ and ‘equal to’.

English

This term we will be focused on the book 'Lost and Found' by Oliver Jeffers. The mastery keys for this unit include:

• Combine words to make sentences.
• Leave spaces between words.
• Begin to use capital letters and full stops. 
• Use capital letters for the names of people and the personal pronoun 'I'

Science

Our Science topic this term will be 'Everyday Materials'.

Geography

This term our Geography topic will be 'World Explorers'. The children will learn about countries and continents, capital cities, and begin to compare different countries.

Art 

Our first Art topic of the year will be 'Spirals'.

Computing

In Computing our topic will be 'Computing Systems and Networks'. 

PE

In PE we will be doing 'Multiskills - throwing and catching'.
