Year 2 2025 - 2026

Miss Turner

Year 2 | Our Lady and St Kenelm Catholic School

Hi everyone and welcome to Year 2. The teacher in Year 2 is Mrs Turner and the teaching assistant is Miss Birchall.

Please check the school Facebook, Twitter and School Spider for updates and you are always welcome to contact me on School Spider should you have any questions or concerns.

We have lots of wonderful things planned for the first term in Year 2 including learning all about 'The Victorians'.

Important Information:

Snack:

The cost of snack remains the same at £1 each week. This provides your child with toast at play time, the children also get a selection of fruit at no extra cost. If your child wishes to bring their own snack in this must be a healthy option such as: bread sticks, fruit, vegetables etc.

Homework:

Homework will be set on a Tuesday and it will be due in on the following Monday. The children will be set a selection of Maths, English and Phonics activities along with some creative tasks.

P.E:

Year 2 will have P.E on a Tuesday. The children will need to come to school wearing their school P.E kit which should include:

  • A blue t-shirt - available to buy from school
  • Black shorts, leggings or tracksuit bottoms (no logo or stripe)
  • Black pumps or trainers

The children can wear their school jumper or cardigan over their P.E kit.

Reading:

Children should be reading at least 4 times per week for 10 minutes or more, this is extremely important as it lays the foundations for future learning.  The children will be sent home with 2 reading books, one is a Phonic book which is at the children's current level and the other is a 'Reading for Pleasure book', the children will need support with this book. Once your child has read please sign their reading record in order for them to work towards earning their reading certificates.

Water Bottles:

Water bottles should be brought in every day and should contain only water or flavoured water.

Our Curriculum:

English:

This term we will be focusing on the book 'Troll Swap' by Leigh Hodgkinson. The children will learn how to write a story using a beginning, middle and an end.

Maths:

Our maths topics this half term will include: 'Numbers to 100' and 'Addition and Subtraction'.  The children will also be reinforcing their knowledge of the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. We will also be developing reasoning and problem solving skills.

Phonics:

The children will be taught Phonics each day and a reading session will also be taught each day.
